Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is in a tie for sixth place after the second round of the American Century Championship, a 54-hole tournament for athletes and celebrities.
Romo sits even with Jeremy Roenick at 40 points, improving slightly from a three-way tie for seventh after the first round. But Romo is still well behind former NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver, who took command of the tournament in the second round at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.
Tolliver made an eagle and six birdies en route to a 6-under 66 and a record 33 points Saturday in the modified Stableford scoring format.
“I don’t know about records. They really don’t concern me,” said Tolliver, who quarterbacked at Texas Tech from 1985-88. “I just want one more point than whoever is behind me.”
Tolliver, a two-time winner, has 58 points to take a record 11-point lead into today’s final round. First-round co-leader Jack Wagner was in second place, four-time winner Dan Quinn was another point back at 46, and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway was fourth with 45.
At the other end of the scoreboard, Charles Barkley is in jeopardy of finishing last for the fifth straight year. The NBA Hall of Famer slid to a round of minus-31 Saturday and is minus-59 for the tournament.
