Ousted Miss California USA Carrie Prejean is suing pageant officials over her dismissal, papers filed in the Superior Court of California show.
Pageant officials said Prejean, 22, was stripped of her title in June because she was uncooperative and failed to live up to the terms of her contract.
However, CNN said Prejean’s lawsuit disputes those allegations and accuses pageant officials Keith Lewis and Shanna Moakler, as well as publicist Roger Neal, of libel and religious discrimination.
Prejean claims she was dismissed because she is a Christian who is vocal about her belief that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
“We will make the case that her title was taken from her solely because of her support of traditional marriage,” CNN quoted Prejean’s lawyer, Charles LiMandri, as saying in a statement.
LiMandri said he previously appealed to the pageant officials to retract negative statements they made about Prejean in the media, but they didn’t.
The news agency did not specify what Prejean is seeking in damages through her lawsuit.
