XXL Magazine declared the freshman class of 2009 last year with acts like, Kid Cudi, Ace Hood, and Asher Roth leading the way. The class also featured Cory Gunz, Blu, Mickey Factz, and Charles Hamilton.
Labels are struggling to find revenue streams & many of the freshman aren’t making it to their Sophomore year.
Asher Roth’s expected hit with Keri Hilson flopped on billboard and he’s struggled to find the formula to move on from his one hit wonder “I Love College”. He’s put out three singles since, featuring the before mentioned Keri Hilson, Cee-Lo, and “Lark on My Go Cart” a colossal failure. Rumors put Asher on the job market as soon as Christmas, SRC isn’t happy with his flops and his image is noticeably absent from the label’s home page.
Charles Hamilton already beat Asher as a Freshman class drop out, Hamilton was dropped from Universal Records over three months ago. Universal determined he wasn’t capable of creating a hit song. The boot from Universal appears to have kicked off a Hamilton downward spiral, he was recently seen in a video getting punched in the face after he made some distasteful comments to a young woman.
Ace Hood, who was also on the Freshman list, was dropped not once, but twice, by two different major labels. He also failed to deliver a hit song even with the help of superstar Jazmine Sullivan on the hook of his song, Champion. Ace is set to deliver a release on DJ Khalid’s new label after both appear to be dropped from Def Jam.
Not on the Freshman list, but many said he should have been, was PA rapper Wiz Khalifa. His huge buzz at the time had many thinking he’d be the next to blow. Wiz has since been dropped from Warner Records.
The future does look bright from some including Blu who remained indie and is doing well touring and putting out his own music. Rapper Curren$y who could never get out of the light of Lil Wayne at Young Money Records, has left that label to make some great music released through Amalgam Digital. Kid Cudi is also finding success in touring and digital sales. Finally, Michael Barber is making some serious noise and is set for a European and US tour beginning in early 2010.
Barber, who recently signed a distribution deal via Hoopla Media and Universal Records, was quick to knock Asher on his way out the revolving SRC door. Michael is continuing lasting year’s beef by taking shots at Mr. Roth in his newly-released, self-produced single, ‘The Truth.’ The Truth is the second in a one two punch as a follow-up to last year’s Barber’s diss track ‘Asher’s Nightmare.’
Barber’s soon to be released ‘The Truth’ mixtape produced by the well-known, award winning DJ Fade from Nashville, is rumored to take more shots at Roth, Charles Hamilton and even the Black Eyed Peas. ‘The Truth’ is expected to released on over 200 websites as early as next week.
