Las Vegas Mayor Says Obama No Longer Welcome

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Obama’s recent anti-Vegas comments come less than a year after he said federal bailout money shouldn’t be used for corporations to visit Las Vegas.

Yet, the President claims he didn’t mean anything unfavorable about Las Vegas.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman says President Obama is no longer welcome in Silver City after Obama told a New Hampshire audience, “When times are tough, you tighten your belts, you don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.”

In a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid President Obama said:

“I hope you know that during my Town Hall today, I wasn’t saying anything negative about Las Vegas. I was making the simple point that families use vacation dollars, not college tuition money, to have fun,” Obama wrote. “There is no place better to have fun than Vegas, one of our country’s great destinations. I have always enjoyed my visits, look forward to visiting in a few weeks, and hope folks will visit in record numbers this year.”

Goodman isn’t buying it, he told reporters gathered into his office at City Hall, “Obama is no friend to Las Vegas. I think he has a psychological hangup about us.”

Senator Reid isn’t very happy either, in a statement released about the incident Reid urged Obama to “lay off Las Vegas.”

“I just spoke to the White House and told them that while the president is correct that people saving for college need to be fiscally responsible, the president needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn’t be spending their money,” Reid said. “To truly reenergize our economy, we need people to travel to Las Vegas. I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas.”

Pastry chef wins Miss Sunset Tan Pageant at The Palms

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

First there was 40, and then 30. Then they were cut down to 10 finalists, and it wound up with 28-year-old pastry chef Hillary Fisher from Charleston, S.C., being crowned Miss Sunset Tan 2009 at the second annual swimsuit pageant at the Palms.

Seconds after she won, Hillary told me: “I didn’t think I’d even get into the Top 10. There were just so many beautiful women competing. I never guessed I’d go all the way and win. I’m speechless. I’ve never been this excited in my life, and it’s been a longtime dream finally coming true.”

Hillary is a specialty cake baker who runs her catering service from home. Now she will move her business to Las Vegas as she takes on the role of official spokesmodel for Sunset Tan, which has a tanning salon here at the Palms Place. Hillary also will be seen in Season 3 of E!’s Sunset Tan. I served as one of the judges for the pageant, which was filmed as Season 3’s premiere in September.

Hillary was previously one of Playboy’s Top 10 models and was a candidate for the magazine’s Model of the Year.

Sunset Tan owners Jeff Bozz and Devin Haman wrapped the winner’s sash around Hillary as they posed for photographers, including our contributing photographer Tom Donoghue, who shot the photo gallery for VDLX. Sunset Tan cast members Janelle Perry, Molly Shea, Ania Migdal, Jenae Alt and Nick D’Anna were on hand with singer and judge Ashley Parker Angel to congratulate Hillary.

The pageant ran all three days of the weekend-long Kandyland party at the Palms Pool, which featured new Give recording star Jenae and Grammy Award-winning rapper Snoop Dogg in concert. Men were required to wear all white for the Lingerie Ball, with the ladies in sexy, barely there underwear, low-cut corsets and fishnet stockings with garter belts.
