Flavor Flav spent $5.7 Million on drugs

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Flavor Flav holds nothing back in his memoir, dubbed ‘Flavor Flav: Icon,’ in which he takes readers on a journey from being the court jester of rap to the court jester of Reality TV. In between there were years of wall-to-wall cocaine addiction and it’s a wonder the New York native can remember any of it (he’s amazed as well). Public Enemy’s ebullient hype man spoke openly to PopEater about how he got clean, the “difficult” experience of starring in a dating show even though he had a girlfriend the whole time, his plans to get married “real soon” and talks about a debt owed to MC Hammer.

You’re very honest in the book about your drug use. It got really crazy.

Yeah I was spending $2,600 a day, for six years, every single day. I don’t know how much that is but if you did the math, wow, I went through a lot of money. If I did the math I’d probably be shocked on how much money I spent, I’d probably punch myself in the face.

When you recounted your life, can you believe everything you’ve done?

I’ve done a lot. I didn’t really think about it like that. I thought more, damn how can I remember everything I’ve done!

How did you get clean?

I went out to California in the middle of 2003 and I changed my people, places and things. My also wanting to pursue a TV and movie career, I knew that in order for me to do that and be successful, I had to leave all of that behind me. I had to because me being a major celebrity, everything that I do, word will travel. I didn’t want to build a bad reputation in other states. I wanted to leave all that stuff in New York. That’s what really helped me get clean by me not wanting to build up a reputation of me going through neighborhoods buying drugs.

Didn’t MC Hammer help your TV career?

Yeah I asked him for his advice on whether I should do ‘The Surreal Life’ or not. I wasn’t going to do it, I figured it was for has-beens, at that time I didn’t consider myself a has-been, I considered myself still hot. I asked MC Hammer for his advice and he said I should do it because if I do it then great things could happen afterwards like it did for him and he was right.

And America fell in love with you.

That’s because I fell in love with America! You only get back what you give off Nicki!

You lost your virginity when you were very young.

I was six years old. I lost my virginity by experimenting. The girl was the same age as me. We kind of felt a little something funny. We knew it was kind of wrong yet we felt it was kind of natural.

How is that even possible?

I mean I call it a lost virginity when the penis penetrates the vagina, I do consider that a cherry pop.

Ever get tired of carrying that big clock around?

Never. The clock is American Express. I don’t leave home without it. My neck is used to it after all of these years. My neck has developed certain muscles, I forget the clock is around me.

You did a dating show and yet you had a girl friend the whole time.

Yes I did. Well I’m an entertainer, my job is to bring America good TV. In my book I had to write about me being an entertainer but yet after I finished entertaining I go home to my family. Yeah that was kind of difficult but I had to do it. I’m still with my girlfriend, we’ve been together now going on eight years and we have a kid together.

So when are you going to marry her?

Real soon. I just got to put myself in a much more comfortable state for me to get married. I’m still not in a comfortable state. There are certain things I want to do within myself. I just really want to be in the right financial position before I say ‘I do.’

You have seven kids.

Yeah from 25 to 4 and I’m going for three more so I can have my personal 10. I want a starting five and some substitutes. I also have four grand-children and my grand-kids call me grand-daddy. I spoil them as much as I can.

You also had 62 traffic violations.

Over 62. I don’t have a license right now but there’s just a couple more things that I have to do here in New York to clear that up and once we do that, we are good to go.

You’re an avid bowler.

Oh yes, I get down. I’m Flavor Flav Twinkle Toes Flintstone. My average is like 150, 160, stuff like that. Every now and then I get up to 170, 180.

Was your relationship with Brigitte Neilsen real?

That was definitely really, really real. She’s married now, she’s over in Italy with her husband and children. She’s doing good. We speak from time to time.

Hey thanks for speaking to me Flav

Wesley Snipes is going to Prison

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Wesley Snipes was ordered on Friday to start serving a three-year prison sentence for failing to file income tax returns by a federal judge who rejected the Hollywood star’s bid for a new trial.

“The defendant Snipes had a fair trial … The time has come for the judgment to be enforced,” U.S. District Judge Terrell Hodges said in his ruling.

Revoking bail for the 48-year-old star of the “Blade” trilogy, the judge ordered him to report to prison as directed by the U.S. Marshals Service or Bureau of Prisons.

It was not clear when or where Snipes would begin serving his time behind bars, however. His lawyer, Daniel Meachum, has said he would appeal if a new trial was denied.

Meachum told the Orlando Sentinel the ruling was shocking.

“Wesley is very disappointed but staying strong and positive,” the newspaper quoted Meachum as saying.

Snipes had already lost his appeal of the prison sentence stemming from his 2008 conviction in Hodges’ Ocala, Florida, court on three counts of “willful failure to file tax returns” for 1999 through 2001.

Snipes was found not guilty of five other counts in the high-profile felony tax case.

In seeking a new trial, Meachum had argued that jurors in the original trial were biased and that the prosecution’s star witness had his own criminal problems.

At his sentencing, prosecutors said Snipes, a resident of Windermere, Florida, had earned more than $38 million since 1999 but had filed no tax returns or paid any taxes through October 2006.

Although he is best known for his roles in action films, Snipes has also had critical success in comedies like “White Men Can’t Jump” in 1992. He played the lead in director Spike Lee’s interracial drama “Jungle Fever” in 1991 and also played the jazz saxophonist in Lee’s “Mo’ Better Blues” in 1990.

Eric Thompson, a supervisor in the U.S. Marshals Service office in Orlando, Florida, said the Bureau of Prisons would notify Snipes and his lawyer of a surrender date.

“He’ll probably get it by certified mail,” Thompson said.

He declined to say what prison was likely to be selected for Snipes except to say that it would not be in Florida.

A listing for Snipes already posted on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website says his prisoner ID or registration number as 43355-018, his location is “in transit” and his release date is “unknown.”

Jessica Alba offends Screenwriters

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Jessica Alba is pretty. Like many actors and actresses, her attractiveness has helped propel her stardom, but her pleasing physical features have brought with it a definite downside: People assume she’s dumb. When the most memorable moment in your film career, arguably, is a semi-raunchy dance in “Sin City,” it’s hard to combat that perception, but Alba sure didn’t help herself with a somewhat-innocuous comment she made recently that has every screenwriter in town gunning for her.

Elle will be featuring Alba on their December cover, and they teased the feature on their website, including a few choice quotes from her interview to go along with a photo slideshow. In one of those quotes, she says, “Good actors, never use the script unless it’s amazing writing. All the good actors I’ve worked with, they all say whatever they want to say.” Forgetting for a second the weird punctuation in that first sentence — is she instructing the shadowy legion of “good actors” not to use the script? — there’s no context to know what inspired these thoughts. But that hasn’t stopped several prominent writers from making their unhappiness known.

The most reasonable of these responses was from John August, who has collaborated with director Tim Burton and wrote the “Charlie’s Angels” movies. Acknowledging that the quote may not have come out the way Alba intended, August used her comments for a good-old-fashioned teachable moment about the importance of the screenplay to the overall film. (For example: “Scripts aren’t just the dialogue.”) But while his response was at least polite, it’s funny how other writers, in defending their craft, enjoyed taking potshots at Alba — specifically the fact that because she’s attractive, she must be an idiot.

“I would love to see Jessica Alba join the improv workshop I attend,” wrote veteran TV writer Ken Levine. “She might find that creating a character, moving a story forward, and holding her own with other gifted actors without a script requires more than nice $#@!.” Following along in that line of thinking, married writers Michael Seitzman and Ellen Rapoport decided to mock her alleged stupidity by juxtaposing random quotes from Alba’s interviews and tweets with classic lines from famous movies. The name of the article? “Jessica Alba: From the Mouths of Boobs.”

It’s no surprise why screenwriters would be offended: Theirs is a profession that’s not much understood or respected by even those in the business, and having someone high-profile like Alba dis them sure doesn’t help the cause. But it’s worth noting that these writers’ way of hitting back is to say, essentially, “You’re pretty, you don’t know anything, shut up.” (Even in August’s response, he includes a bit of advice for Alba that she befriend screenwriters because “We are pushovers for attractive people who pay attention to us.”)

Listen, Alba’s comment, if it is exactly what she meant, is really just silly. She makes disposable movies that aren’t exactly known for their scintillating writing — it’s no great cinematic crime if all the actors in her films “say whatever they want to say.” But to go after her for being pretty is just petty. And for all the attention this one quote has stirred up, it’s amazing that nobody seems to have bothered to click on the next picture in the Elle slideshow, where she talks about being away from her two-year-old daughter to return to acting. “The time I’m not spending with my kid has to be worth it,” she said, “so when I sat down with my agents after I was ready to go back to work, I told them: It’s all about the directors.” Oh boy, writers just love hearing things like that.

Lil Wayne is banned from the Wynn Las Vegas Casino

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Lil Wayne has criss-crossed the country since getting out of jail last week — but there is one place he couldn’t get into this weekend … the Wynn Las Vegas.

Lil Wayne joined Drake on stage at The Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on Saturday night …. but sources tell us Weezy was a no-show at the after-party located in the Wynn Las Vegas … and it wasn’t his choice.

We’re told a rep for the Wynn informed a member of Drake’s entourage that Lil Wayne would not be allowed on the property — and if he tried to enter, he’d be removed.

As for why Wayne was persona non grata sources tell us Wynn execs didn’t want any trouble knowing Wayne is on a very short legal leash, i.e. no booze for three years.

The ban never became an issue a rep for Weezy tells us he chilled at the Palms Casino Resort and was not “scheduled” to appear at any events. A rep for the Wynn had no comment.
